Passage To Africa 2012 Photo Competition

The Passage To Africa 2012 Photo Competition has begun!

Send us your favourite pictures from safari by July 20th to enter July's competition! For this first month we are looking for African wildlife photos.

Monthly winners will receive a year subscription to Africa Geographic Magazine and will be considered for our end of year Grand Prize a pair of Swarovski binoculars.

We will choose a winning photo from a child (17 and under), amateur and professional each month.

July - General Wildlife
August - Cultures & People
September - Safari Experiences
October - Birds
November - Mammals
December - Abstract

RULES

  • Only photographs taken in Africa will be considered.

  • A photographer may submit a maximum of two images per entry each month. Each image should be saved at 300 dpi in JPEG or TIFF format.

  • Entries will only be accepted by email. An image up to 3 MB in size can be sent as an attachment to an e-mail to kc@passagetoafrica.com

  • All photos should show subjects in the wild. Photographers are requested to avoid doing anything that may injure or distress any animals or may harm the environment in their attempt to get the shot.

  • All entries must be supplied with your name and contact details (e-mail and postal addresses and daytime telephone number). Please also supply technical details (camera make and model, lens, exposure and speed, other equipment used, and film if relevant); and include a short paragraph (maximum 120 words) on yourself and where, when and how the photograph was taken.

  • The monthly winner will be notified by e-mail and announced in next month's Newsletter.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  • The Passage To Africa Photo 2012 photo competition, is open to persons of all ages, excluding employees or agencies of Passage To Africa, their group companies or their family members, or anyone else connected with the Competition.

  • The Competition runs each calendar month starting from 00.01 on 1st July to 23.59 on 26th December 2012. All times are based on GMT.

  • All entries must be made personally. Entries made through agents/third parties/ spambots/ code hacking/ multibrower-bots are invalid.

  • All images submitted may be subject to moderation. Passage To Africa has the absolute discretion to upload or not upload any image without giving reasons for the decision. Passage To Africa shall in particular refuse to upload any image for the following reasons:
    a. Use of defamatory or malicious content
    b. Any indecent or inappropriate content
    c. Inclusion of other brands in a significant manner

  • By entering, the entrant agrees that :
    a. they have personally taken the images submitted
    b. the images were taken in one of the specific regions as per clause.
    c. they are the sole owner and copyright holder of the images.
    d. they grant to Passage To Africa the right to use the winning images from the date of entry to 18 months after the closing date of the Competition and for no further consideration beyond that of the stated prizes. However, all such uses will credit the photographer, provided they give their agreement. (For the avoidance of doubt, copyright shall remain with the entrant).
    e. they grant to Passage To Africa the right to use other entered images from the date of entry to 12 months after the closing date of the Competition for no consideration. However, all such uses will credit the photographer provided they give their agreement. (As with winning images, copyright shall remain with the entrant).

  • Entrants may use digital manipulation to optimise and/or crop images, adjust brightness, contrast and colour balance or retouch dust spots. Images may also be sharpened and multiple exposures in camera will be allowed. However, entrants may not use composite or montage photographs produced from more than one original image. Nor may they add or remove elements which would otherwise appear.

  • The winner may be required to produce the original image files before the prize is awarded.

  • Entries not fulfilling the stated criteria will be deemed ineligible and disqualified. Where this is discovered after the prize has been awarded, the winner will be disqualified and the prize, or the equivalent value, returned by the entrant.

  • Each entrant’s approved image may be shown on the promoter’s website, newsletter and social media pages together with the image description. Passage To Africa reserves the right to amend this description for reasons of presentation.

  • No purchase is necessary to enter.

  • Each month’s competition closes at 11.59pm GMT on the 20th day of that month. Photographs submitted after this date will automatically be entered into the following month’s competition, provided it is still running over that period.

  • Each month the judging panel, will select the photographer whose image is deemed to best capture a spontaneous moment in time, portraying a land, its people, its wildlife or culture.

THE PRIZES

  • The Monthly Prize: Annual Africa Geographic Magazine

  • The Grand Prize : To Be Announced

  • Prizes are not transferrable and there is no cash alternative. Passage To Africa reserves the right to substitute a prize of similar value in the event of non-availability of the product nominated as the prize.

  • Winners will be notified by email within 10 days of the closing date and the winning image will be posted on the Passage To Africa Facebook page and the following month's newsletter.

GENERAL

  • Data Protection: your personal details will at all times be kept confidential and only used for the operation of the Competition. However by entering the Competition, unless you have specifically indicated otherwise, Passge To Africa reserve the right to contact you with news, promotions and offers.

  • Passage To Africa accepts no responsibility for entries or votes that are lost, delayed, misdirected or incomplete or cannot be delivered or entered for any technical or other reason. Proof of delivery of the entry is not proof of receipt.

  • Passage To Africa do not accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, liabilities, injury or disappointment incurred or suffered by entrants as a result of entering the Competition or accepting any prize. We further disclaim liability for any injury or damage to you or any other person's computer relating to or resulting from participation in or downloading any materials in connection with the Competition.

  • By entering the Competition you are deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.

  • Passage To Africa's decision in all matters is final and binding.

  • Passage To Africa shall not be liable for any failure to comply with its obligations where the failure is caused by something outside its reasonable control or any other circumstances amounting to force majeure.

  • This Competition will be governed by South African law

Nyamuragira Volcano Hike

I recently went hiking up the flank eruptions of Nyamuragira Volcano in Virunga National Park. It was actually erupting up until a week before we arrived. We were the first people to walk on the fresh lava flow. It was like a moon landscape, with sulphur gas coming up through vents. The residual heat from the rock melted our shoes if we weren't careful as to where we stepped.

Katavi lies in remote, southwest of Tanzania. It is isolated and untrammelled, providing the intrepid traveller with a true wilderness. The National Park extends across 4471 square kilometres of rugged hills, flat alluvial plains, marshes, lakes, and original miombo woodlands, all located within a truncated arm of the Rift Valley.

A couple of lionesses had brought down a giraffe on the edge of a floodplain. The water was unusually deep due to high flood levels in 2010 and the carcass was hard to get at. Frustrated scavengers hung back impatiently, waiting for the last lioness to leave.
